Joey Desjardins is a wonderful dad (you might have spotted one of his adorable daughters in some of our product photoshoots), a fierce para-cycling athlete, an adventure seeker, passionate about traveling, and a great community member.
On June 4th, to welcome the sunny weather with open arms, Joey joined the local school his daughters attend for a super fun Bike Drill Session. We could not resist learning more about it.
Interview:
Motion Composites: Hello, Joey! Thank you for agreeing to meet with us today. Tell us more about this event.
Joey Desjardins: We had a bike drill session. We teach the kids how to use the bike brakes and how to signal while you are on your bike. Basically, we were teaching kids how to ride their bikes safely. At the end of the activity, we took a ride around Vankleek Hill, Ontario, the town where the school is.
I was not expecting the kids to be this engaged, but it was so much fun! 96 kids brought their bikes to school, and I was amazed by how excited the students were to do this activity.
MC: Why did they invite you specifically? Is it because the school knows that you are an athlete?
JD: Yes, it was mainly because my girls attend that school, and the school knows I am an athlete. I received a lot of support from some of the teachers on this year’s para-cycling season.
All the kids are wearing the t-shirts I was selling this year every Friday to show their support, and many of the parents bought some extra t-shirts. It is wonderful to feel the love of the community and to see them excited about my career as an athlete.
MC: How did you feel when you participated in this activity?
JD: I consider this activity the highlight of my cycling career. I loved every minute of it, and it was so much fun! The kids were super engaged; everyone had a blast and enjoyed the warm weather.
More schools should consider doing this kind of engaging activity with their students. It is simple, enjoyable and inclusive.
MC: Would you like to continue participating in this kind of event?
JD: Absolutely! One week later, the elementary school I attended organized another bike day, and around 120 students brought their own bikes to ride again.
I would love to continue to be as involved as I am in my community, and I consider that this kind of activity is only the beginning of my opportunity to share my passion with the people who live in my area.
MC: What are your other plans for the summer?
I am still waiting to see if I have been selected to participate in this year's Paralympic Games in Paris 2024.
By the end of September, I will be flying to Zurich for the 2024 Road Para-Cycling World Championships. So, stay tuned to see the results of that competition!
We want to thank Joey for the time that he took to meet with us and share his experience on this amazing event. We are rooting for him, and we cannot wait to see him participate in this year’s world championship in Zurich, Switzerland.
Make sure to follow him on social media to learn more about his career as an athlete and keep up to date with his adventures around the world.
